Properties of Base Steel

Steelcorp's GALVABOND™ is available in Commercial Quality (CQ) steel as per ISO 3575 or Commercial Steel (CS) as per ASTM A653/653M.

These are defined in the following tables showing the different strength levels and formability attributes.

Nominal Thickness and Widths

GALVABOND™ is produced from a wide range of thicknesses and widths. GALVABOND™ can be ordered from nominal thicknesses of 0.20 mm up to 2.30 mm, with full widths of 915 mm and 1220 mm. Slitted widths can also be accommodated.

Coating Weight/Mass

Coating Weight (measured as grams of coating per square meter, g/m2, total both sides) is an important factor in the effective application of GALVABOND sheet. Galvabond has a coating weight of from Z100 -Z275 grams per square meter.

Surface Finish

The hot-dip galvanizing process results in a zinc coating with a crystalline structure that is clearly visible on the surface after coating. When the as-coated surface consists of large, multi-faceted grains, the finish is termed "spangled". This large spangled appearance is called "Regular Spangle".

For some applications, especially when the sheet will be painted, the spangled pattern may be undesirable for reasons of appearance or incomplete paint coverage at the spangle boundaries. To remedy this problem, the sheet undergoes skin passing or temper rolling operation to make the sheet's surface uniform and smooth.

Its appearance resembles the matte finish of the uncoated cold rolled sheet. The use of Extra Smooth GALVABOND™ sheet is necessary when the appearance of spangle boundaries after painting is unacceptable.

Surface Treatment

GALVABOND™ can be specified to have the following surface treatment:

  • Chemical Treatment / Passivated
  • Resin Coated
